Mr. Spock's Neighborhood (for DragonCon TV)

about

A piece of music I wrote and recorded for Dragon*Con TV back in 2013. I present Mr. Spock's Neighborhood, a parody mashup of two TV show themes. The Mr. Roger's Neighborhood Theme, "It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood," was composed by Fred M. Rogers in 1967. (Did you know he had a B.A. in composition? ) And the original Star Trek Theme "Where No Man Has Gone Before" by Alexander Courage was composed a year later in 1968. The wikipedia article mentions Roddenberry's contribution of unasked for lyrics.

When I say mash up, I mean I literally smushed the two themes together--it is not a medley. At any point, you should be able to hear echoes of both of the themes' melodic contours at once. It was a fun challenge. I found it interesting that the two themes have similar musical structures both in terms of harmony and melodic contours. I noticed this before I happened to look at the copyright dates and see that they were composed only a year apart from one another.

The Dragon*Con TV sketch features Mr. Spock speaking to the audience and conveying the meaning of "It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" in his own words. I personally imagine someone has translated the lyrics into Vulcan using Babelfish and then translated them back into English. My music is playing in the background. Joyce Lanterman produced the video, and Tony Scott plays Spock. That is Brian Richardson's voice at the beginning with “Will Not Be Seen Tonight” graphics by Liz Bradley. I think both Joyce and Brian worked on the script. I have watched this video many times.
