Knitting with Twitter (Patreon)

about

Back in late August/early September of 2015 I caught a cold that just hit me like a truck. I spent the first day of it in bed with enough energy to knit a couple of rows at a time while listening to Pandora radio and then check up on twitter while I rested from knitting. (I was too tired to even play clicky games on the iPad.)

I had also been thinking about this idea for a swamp boat documentary that we might do after Contraflow in New Orleans and wanted banjo music, so I looked up banjo music on Pandora Radio. Meanwhile Brooke Abbey, banjo goddess, actually made up a swamp boat song for the documentary. (I have footage and music. I still plan to do this swamp boat thing at some point.) And I looked up fiddle music too because fiddle is love. Twitter friends, knitting, tea, and Pandora Radio kept me company through a day that could have been absolutely miserable. And I really appreciated it and still do. So on September 6th, 2015 I wrote "Knitting With Twitter" which incidentally ends up being that knitting song I told Paul Lenoue I was going to write.

Also, at the time I wrote this song, you 'favorited' things on twitter. Now Twitter has so 'like' things just like Facebook.

lyrics

Knitting with Twitter (Abridged)

Copyright 2015 by Mary Crowell

The month is September—
It’s time to get sick.
I’ll start a new project.
Which yarn shall I pick?
The self-striping wool
That has given me troubles?
Or cotton for dishtowels
The colors of bubbles?

Chorus:
Knitting with twitter
For this sickly Lady-O
With banjo and fiddle
On Pandora Radio
The ping of my favorites
Sings out from my phone.
I’m knitting with Twitter.
I’m never alone.

I wish to be running
Or recording a song,
But sacked out in bed
Is the place I belong.
Circular needles
And jammies for me—
My raspy throat
Is demanding its tea.

Chorus:
Knitting with twitter
For this sickly Lady-O
With banjo and fiddle
On Pandora Radio
The ping of my favorites
Sings out from my phone.
I’m knitting with Twitter.
I’m never alone.

Bridge:
Twitter for rest breaks
Tweet between rows
Politics, Art or you
Whine about printer woes
Kickstart an Album,
Announce all your shows
Knitting with twitter
Means my eyes will close,
And I’ll sleep . . .
So that I will get better.

Chorus:
Knitting with twitter
For this sickly Lady-O
With banjo and fiddle
On Pandora Radio
The ping of my favorites
Sings out from my phone.
I’m knitting with Twitter.
I’m never alone.

The sock’s almost finished;
I’m reducing a row.
The heel turned out pretty,
And now for the toe.
I’m so tired of sleeping;
I’ve rested my fill.
The soup’s getting
tiresome,
But I might be less ill.

Chorus:
Knitting with twitter
For this sickly Lady-O
With banjo and fiddle
On Pandora Radio
The ping of my favorites
Sings out from my phone.
I’m knitting with Twitter.
I’m never alone.
