Anyway, this song. Ages--nay, LIFETIMES ago, Paul Lenoue asked me about writing a song about a witch calling tech support about her cauldron, Mr. Cauldron EZ Brew. And then in 2017 soulwriters (a song writers' group I'm in) had a song prompt that called for you to use a TV quote. So, I decided it was time to write this song and picked a quote from Bewitched.
"After all, why should I learn how to drive when I already know how to fly?" This summed up my confusion about Samantha And Darwood's relationship (I know. I know. But his mother-in-law called him that, and I really can't blame her.) Like he was always keeping Samantha down, Man! Here is this well nigh omnipotent being who gets sick if she never uses her powers. And Darrin gives her such a hard time about it. Bless. So, I wrote this song, accompanied on my piano.
But it wasn't Electro swing yet. Paul Lenoue helpfully emailed me a link to a cool YouTube tutorial about what makes electro swing. I referenced it heavily, but because this song doesn't use as much repetition of lyrics, this is more of a Mary approximation of electro swing.
The vocals and the clarinets (soprano and bass) are performed by on real instruments and vocal cords. (My own vocal cords. They are still attached.) The other instruments are MIDI. I used two different drummer programs from Logic Pro: Jasper and Ronnie. (Thanks guys!)
My multi talented and beloved husband, Wesley, created this delightful album art that evokes Bewitched with its color scheme but violates no copyrights. .

Mr. Cauldron EZ Brew
Copyright 2017 by Mary Crowell
Dedicated to Paul Lenoue who suggested the topic and came up with the title
[Driving quote is by Samantha on Bewitched]
Mr. Cauldron EZ Brew,
Brew a lover—make him true.
I don’t need a Darrin—just a guy
Who won’t ask me to drive when I can fly.
Mr. Cauldron Tech Support,
'wish my time for waiting short.
I’ve turned it off and on again,
But when I brew, I just can’t win.
Interlude:
Your call is quite important as our texting bot will tell you.
We’ve run out of personnel for all of you to yell to.
There’s no one here with know-how. That’s really kind of sad.
Our crew’s all toads and newts now. And all of them sky clad.
Bridge:
Darwood, who needs him?
Give me a coffee with a Bippity Bim.
Darwood, look at this guy!
Making me drive, when I wanna fly!
Mr. Cauldron, I’ve found out
A happy thing to smile about.
The coffee that you brew makes great
Caffeine homunculi to date.
Mr. Cauldron EZ Brew,
Brew a lover—make him true.
I don’t need a Darrin—just a guy
“After all, why should I learn how to drive,
when I already know how to fly?”

The lyrics are brilliant and vocal arrangements irresistible. The vocal counterpoint in “Last Spaceship,” “Common Ground,” and “Quetico” are particular favorites of mine. Mary Crowell
