The song prompt four the fourth week of Soulwriters in 2019 was "tempting fate" with the optional musical prompt of using an ostinato. (A repeated musical pattern often in the bass) A couple of days ago I was sight-reading through the beginning of Sondheim's Into the Woods trying to reverse engineer it. And I got the idea for this ostinato. I did not have to include the penalty prompt of "talking cheese" thank goodness! That would have been a very different song.

I'm probably at least a little influenced by Hadestown in the vocals.

I don’t feel she’s gotten out enough lately

She’s been sewing other people’s shrouds for them

‘Thought I’d ask her out on a whim.

And see if she’d like to hang out with me and Lady Luck

Who’s dealing cards and out of *** to give.

She’ll live and let live

What else to do with rogues and bards

That poor girl she’s been working too hard.

She’s been missing out on all the fun lately

Needs to be with all the saints and the sinners.

Sometimes nobody’s the winner

These legends of muses of Greece and the Nords

Have a way of getting bored, my friend.

Knowing the story’s end.

What else to do with rogues and bards

Those poor gals have been working too hard.



But, I’ve been tempting Fate

She sent me spoilers. Oh honey, they’re great.

I can no longer have my hopes or fears

I bought her a heavy pair of shears.

We play a drinking game called “Prophecy”

Happens when she goes out with me. I’m sunk

‘Cause I’m the one who got Fate drunk.

Bless the hearts of rogues and bards

Those poor Joes are working hard.
