The Library Song

about

The lyrics are inspired by my Tuesdays volunteering at our local library last summer and Fall. There is a Tuesday book sale and a gardeners' kiosk. And Linda and Dale are real people, and they are lovely as are all our librarians.

The bridge of the song is inspired by the lyric prompt "finding fire" and was part of the Soul Writers challenge of 2017 to write a song a week. I looked up the word "fire" in its literal and metaphorical meanings, and included some Dewey decimal references.

Simon Crowell guest stars in this one. I recorded the song in Logic Pro and used the Digital drummer Darcy (a favorite of Betsy Tinney's as well!) Wesley Crowell created my album art.

The Library Song
Copyright 2017 by Mary Crowell
Verse:
There’s a place you can go to buy a tote,
Borrow some books; you can sign up to vote.
There are newspapers and big magazines.
Old and the young come—all ages between.
Thank your librarian today (cause they’re doing well)
Donate some cash or books. Show them and tell
All of the world that they’re great (‘cause they are.)
You’ll go farther here than you will in your car.
At the Library.

Chorus
At the computers folks are looking for jobs,
Typing up sermons, and corn on the cob—
Recipes. Activities
In the technology room,
And people find out—not assume
‘Cause they’re at the library reading.
they’re at the library reading.

Verse:
It’s Tuesday—the Book-Sale is full swing.
Linda’s pricing books that people will bring.
Dale has his cart, and he’s sorting them all
While the Gardener’s kiosk is prepping for Fall.

Bridge:
What fires you up? Do research to know
Maybe in three nineties with Rainbow Crow.
Or seven eighties for Music and Dance
Or checking out Fiction for a fiery romance.
Or two oh two point three for the opposite of Heaven Heaven.
And fire safety’s in three sixty-three point thirty-seven.
The Library is the place for finding fire,
Bb F
You can think and learn to your heart’s desire
At the library!

They’re shelf-reading while sitting in the floor.
Grand folks are bringing kids in through the door.
The Teens in the teen room are looking for lore—
A thriving community. That’s what it’s for!

At the library, library, library,
At the library!
